8 Steps to Do After a Car Accident

Step 1
Check for Injuries
Start by assessing yourself and everyone else involved for any signs of injury. If anyone has been hurt, call 911 immediately.
Step 2
Move to a Safe Location
If your vehicle can still be driven, carefully move it to the shoulder or another safe location to keep traffic flowing and reduce the risk of additional accidents. If the vehicle cannot be moved, leave it where it is and make your way to a safe area.
Step 3
Contact the Police
No matter how minor the collision may seem, reporting the accident to the police is important so there is an official record of what happened.
Step 4
Record the Details of the Accident
Collect essential information from every driver involved, including names, addresses, insurance details, license plate numbers, and driver’s license numbers. Also gather contact information for any passengers and witnesses. Take photographs of the accident scene, the damage to your vehicle, and any visible injuries.
Step 5
Avoid Admitting Fault
Do not admit responsibility at the accident scene, even if you think you may have caused the crash. There may be circumstances you are unaware of, and you may not know all of the traffic laws or regulations that could apply.
Step 6
Inform Your Insurance Company
Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as you can so the claims process can begin. Be prepared to provide all of the information they request.
Step 7
Seek Medical Care
Not every injury produces symptoms immediately, so the absence of pain does not necessarily mean you were not injured. Arrange for a complete medical evaluation as soon as possible to document your condition.
Step 8
Speak With a Lawyer
Working with an attorney allows you to concentrate on your recovery while they handle tasks such as collecting evidence, consulting with experts, and negotiating with your insurance company.
